This series consists of school subject correspondence files. The records provide information on Indian students attending Indian day schools under the oversight of the Omaha, Winnebago, and Yankton Agencies, as well as students attending off-reservation boarding schools, including the American Indian Institute, Chilloco Indian School, Flandreau School, Genoa Indian Industrial School, Haskell Institute, Pierre Indian School, Pipestone Indian School, Rapid City Indian School, Sherman Institute, Sac and Fox Sanatorium, Hope College, and various mission schools. The records include correspondence; monthly school attendance reports; maps; lists of students and teachers; transcripts; circulars; statistics; applications for enrollment; annual school census reports; press releases; reports; policy papers; regulations; invoices; vouchers for tuition at public schools; clippings; and publications from the Office of Indian Affairs. Topics covered in the records include administration; job vacancies; school enrollment; road conditions; scholarships; student financial aid; student health; vocational education; student clothing; dormitories; federal/state cooperation for Indian education; agricultural education programs; equipment and supplies; and student home conditions.

The Sherman Institute was established in 1900, as a successor to the Perris Indian School (Perris, Calif.), after the water supply to the previous school was deemed insufficient.
