Colonel Hunt tells of his background in Seattle, Washington, his enlistment in the U.S. Navy and his appointment from the USS PENNSYLVANIA to the U.S. Naval Academy. He comments on Marine training at Parris Island, South Carolina, his assignment to Samoa, landing at Abemama (south of Tarawa) from USS NAUTILUS, friendly fire hit on NAUTILUS, landing in Yokosuka, training at Guadalcanal, and service at Marine posts around the country.
