During his first interview, Capt. Rush recounts his early background and education and his experiences at the U.S. Naval Academy. Also included are details of his assignment to the Destroyer USS CLARK, its location at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and its service in the South Pacific subsequent to the declaration of war. As a submarine officer during 1942, he describes patrols in the THRESHER.

Captain Charles W. Rush, a member of the USNA Class of 1941, was a native of Alabama. During much of his career he was involved in submarine operations, including duty in the THRESHER, BILLFISH, CARBONERO, QUEENFISH, AND BLACKFISH. During assignment to the Office of Naval Operations he made recommendations that involved the polar passage of the USS NAUTILIS and he was also involved in the development of the Subroc Missile System....
