Woven whaling hat made of cedar root, conical with onion-shaped top. Dyed pieces of root woven in to create design featuring figures in canoes (some aiming harpoons) and whales. Patterned borders enclose the whaling scene. From top to bottom: 1) row of diagonal lines falling from right to left on widest part of "onion"; 2) another row of diagonal lines at junction where "onion" merges into body of hat; this row also has dark band running along top; 3) scene is framed by a series of diamonds, lying on their sides, with a central dot; 4) another series of diagonal lines.

Jessie Webster was born on July 11, 1909 and passed away on January 6, 1991. She was the most widely recognized west coast hat weaver on Vancouver Island. She began making baskets at the early age of seven, however, she feels that she did not start to make adequate baskets until much later. She observed her mother making baskets and assisted with collecting the materials, but she also learned from the late Nellie Jacobsen. She started making whaler style hats in the 1960s.
