This collection consists of the research materials used for the book, Mānoa, The Story of a Valley, which was published in Honolulu by Mutual Publishing in 1994. It contains book excerpts, interviews, oral histories, journal articles, letters, maps, newspaper clippings, typescript papers, photographs, sound recordings, and miscellaneous pertaining to the history of Mānoa Valley in Honolulu, Oʻahu from pre-contact to 1993. Specifically, the collection addresses the archaeology, geography, agriculture, educational and religious institutions and organizations, businesses, economic and social conditions, ethnic groups, biography, oral history, poetry, and literature of Mānoa Valley.

George Ryoichi Ariyoshi (born March 12, 1926) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the third governor of Hawaii from 1974 to 1986. He is Hawaii's longest-serving governor and the first American of Asian descent to serve as governor of a U.S. state. Ariyoshi is now considered an elder statesman of the Democratic Party of Hawaii.
