UNEDITED FILM REPORT: On National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space base shuttle Orbiter 099 CHALLENGER 41-C mission, Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island, Cape Canaveral, Florida. Flight commander Navy Capt. Robert L. Crippen, at pre-flight press briefing, makes statement and introduces rest of crew, retired Air Force officer Francis R. Scobee, George Nelson, Terry J. Hart and James D. van Hoften. Tractor moves shuttle assembly toward launch pad. Astronauts at breakfast before flight. They go by NASA bus to launch pad. Ignition, lift-off and chase plane camera tracks until rocket separation and shuttle goes out of sight. Shuttle crew and ground control in voice exchange. Flight crew at work on board spacecraft. Untethered, George Nelson uses backpack jets to maneuver toward tumbling SOLAR MAXIMUM MISSION satellite, snares it, moves it back inside payload bay, crew repairs and re-deploys it. Space shuttle DISCOVERY approaches and lands at Kennedy Space Center.

Francis Richard "Dick" Scobee (May 19, 1939 – January 28, 1986) was an American pilot, engineer and astronaut. He was killed while he was commanding the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986, which suffered catastrophic booster failure during launch of the STS-51-L mission. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. He was a reciprocating engine mechanic for the United States Air Force and served as a combat aviator in the Vietnam War.
