Jewel Stradford LaFontant-MANkarious was born April 28, 1922 to an upper middle class African-American family in Chicago, Illinois. The influence of her father and grandfather, both lawyers, led her to choose a career in law. After receiving an A.B. in political science from Oberlin College in 1943, she entered the University of Chicago Law School and, in 1946, became the first African-American woman to graduate from that institution.
