This series consists of negatives and prints of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II as well as autographed prints from persons involved with the expedition. Images of the expedition itself were taken by the Sutton News Service under the direction of George W. Sutton, Jr. The series includes images of the expedition leaving Dunedin, New Zealand (XGWS-GWS-SNS-10), digging out tractors and planes from the antarctic snow (XGWS-GWS-SNS-41X), penguins (XGWS-GWS-SNS-176), a beer delivery (XGWS-GWS-SNS-30X), and landscape photos of Antarctica (XGWS-GWS-SNS-201X). Specific photographed geographic elements include the Edsel Ford Mountains (XGWS-GWS-SNS-130) and the Rockefeller Mountains (XGWS-GWS-SNS-131). This series also contains autographed prints to Sutton from Lieutenant Commander George O. Noville (XGWS-GWS-4-1-1), Richard Byrd (XGWS-GWS-4-3-1), Jack Dempsey (XGWS-GWS-4-6-2), and Colonel Jacob Ruppert (XGWS-GWS-4-12-1). Additional prints in the series include portraits of the Ruppert Family, including Jacob Ruppert, Sr. (XGWS-GWS-4-15-17) and George Ruppert (XGWS-GWS-4-14-1), as well as prints of C. A. Abele on Easter Island (XGWS-GWS-4-4-1), and Babe Ruth (XGWS-GWS-4-13-2). Please note: More items may be associated with each term than the single item number given in the parentheses.

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics.
