The photographs in this series were accumulated from multiple sources by Justus Baldwin Lawrence and his wife, Carlene Lawrence. Justus Lawrence was a publicity expert who served in the United States Army during World War II, and for various companies and organizations before and after that war. There are few photographs of family members in the series, among them his parents, Leonard and Dorothy Lawrence, his first wife, Mary Peace Lawrence, and his second wife and widow, Carlene Roberts Lawrence. Prior to the war, Lawrence was an assistant to movie executive Samuel Goldwyn, and then director of public relations for the Association of Motion Picture Producers. This series includes photographs from that period in his career featuring celebrities such as Bing Crosby, Charles Lindbergh, Walter Brennan and other actors, and Mayor Fiorello La Guardia of New York City. Lawrence entered the Army in 1942 and was assigned to General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s headquarters in London, England. He represented Eisenhower at the headquarters of Lord Louis Mountbatten, and subsequently became chief public relations officer for the European Theater of Operations, U.S. Army. The series includes a number of portraits of civilian and military leaders from the Allied Nations, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Sir Winston Churchill, and Mountbatten; generals including Eisenhower, George C. Marshall, Walter Bedell Smith, John C. H. Lee, Carl A. Spaatz, Royal B. Lord, and Lewis H. Brereton; and Admirals William F. Halsey, Chester Nimitz, William D. Leahy, Ernest J. King and Robert Bostwick Carney. Other World War II contemporaries and some staff members of Lawrence appearing in photographs in this series include Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, General Norman D. Cota, Major General Elbridge Chapman, Major General Russell L. Maxwell, Brigadier General Walter G. Layman, U. S. Ambassador John G. Winant, Colonel James M. Franey, Colonel Paul W. Thompson, Colonel W. Gould Jones, Colonel Kenneth L. Fox, Lieutenant Colonel David W. Flournay, Major Gilbert Embury, Captain Merrill Panitt, and 2nd Lieutenant Wilfred Minton. Following the war, Lawrence became an executive of the J. Arthur Rank Corporation in New York City. In 1951, General Eisenhower requested him to return to military service as his public relations officer at Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), in Paris and then Rocquencourt, France. The series contains many photographs of the opening ceremonies at the new facility at Camp Voluceau. Appearing in these photographs are French President Vincent Auriol, French Minister of Defense Jules Moch, and General Alfred Gruenther. Others identified in photos from Lawrence’s time at SHAPE include Colonel Jean Brice de Bary, Admiral André Georges Lemonnier, Brigadier Lionel L. Cross, and Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Chant. There are a number of photographs in the series of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower and the Eisenhower residence at Marnes-la-Coquette, France, where they lived while Eisenhower was Supreme Commander, Allied Forces Europe. There is also a photograph of General Eisenhower being made an honorary citizen of that village by Mayor Jean Minot. The series contains few photographs from Lawrence’s later years; there is a group from when Lawrence was a delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), appointed by President Eisenhower in 1958. There are a portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Robert L. Schulz and a couple of photos of his promotion by President Eisenhower in 1953. There are also some snapshots of Lawrence, his wife, Carlene, and friends. The series ends with two photographs of Lawrence’s funeral cortège at Arlington National Cemetery.
