Myra Mahlow Hinman was born January 11, 1926, in Saginaw County, Michigan, the daughter of Henry and Cynthia (Mims) Mahlow. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1946 from Columbia University, and a master's degree in 1954 and a doctorate in 1959, both from the University of Florida. Hinman was an assistant professor at Memphis State University from 1959 to 1961.
