Joseph Warren Keifer was a prominent nineteenth century Ohio political and military leader, the first Ohioan to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Born in Clark County, Ohio, Keifer attended local schools and Antioch College then returned to his family's farm, devoting his spare time to studying law. Born in Old Deer, Scotland on March 14, 1840, David Bremner Henderson emigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Winnebago County, Illinois, in 1846. They moved to Fayette County, Iowa. The family lived in what became known as Henderson Prairie a few miles west of Postville.
