This series contains copies of memorandums sent by the Special Assistant for National Security Affairs to President Lyndon B. Johnson concerning every aspect of United States foreign and military affairs. These memorandums are often accompanied by correspondence, reports, telegrams, and other material from the Secretaries of State and Defense, the Director of Central Intelligence and executive department officials, members of Congress, non-governmental advisers, members of the press, and from U.S. diplomatic posts worldwide that the Special Assistant for National Security Affairs forwarded to the President for his consideration. Topics include U.S. diplomatic relations with nations throughout the world, economic and military assistance programs, intelligence information, foreign trade, legislation related to foreign and military affairs, public relations activities, arms control, and appointments to federal offices. The series also documents day-to-day decision-making concerning the Vietnam War and major foreign policy crises such as the Cuban efforts to cut off the water supply to the Guantanamo Naval Base, the Panama Canal Zone riots in 1964, the Brazilian coup in 1964, the August 1964 attacks on U.S. ships in the Tonkin Gulf, the 1965 Dominican Crisis, disturbances in Cyprus and the Congo, the Indian food crisis, the Six Day War, the 1968 Tet Offensive, the seizure of the USS Pueblo by North Korea, and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. This series contains two subseries. The first subseries contains material sent to the President by McGeorge Bundy, who served as Special Assistant for National Security Affairs from November 22, 1963 through February 1966, and by Robert W. Komer, who served as interim Special Assistant in March 1966. The second subseries contains material sent by Walt W. Rostow, who served as Special Assistant for National Security Affairs from April 1966 to January 20, 1969.
