The Girl Scouts were founded by Juliette Gordon Low on March 12, 1912 when Low organized the first Girl Guide troop meeting of 18 girls at her home in Savannah, Georgia. By the next year they became the Girl Scouts of the United States. By the 1920s troops were forming overseas as well. Kenneth Lee Salazar, a fifth generation Coloradan, was born in Alamosa, Colorado, on March 2, 1955. He grew up on a ranch alongside his seven brothers and sisters nearly 300 miles from Denver. Although his parents, Henry and Emma, received very little education, they heavily stressed the importance of education to their children.
