The NPS Biographical Collection is a growing file that includes records from the early years of the institution to the present. It includes photocopy and original articles, audio and visual media, correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes and newsletters, pamphlets, photographs and negatives, reports, speeches, and technical reports. Notable individuals in the collection are: Fleet Admirals Chester Nimitz and Ernest J. King; federal secretaries James Forrestal, Josephus Daniels, Dan Kimball, Leon Panetta, William Perry, Thomas White and James Roche; Admirals Arleigh Burke, Michael Mullen, James Watkins and Wayne Meyer; NPS astronaut alumni Scott Carpenter, Eugene Cernan, Dan Bursch and Alan Poindexter; Professors John Arquilla, George Haltiner, Richard Hamming, Wayne Hughes, Gordon McCormick, Michael Melich and Russ Stolfi; and dozens of U.S. military admirals and generals and foreign dignitaries.

Leon Edward Panetta was born on June 28, 1938, in Monterey, California. His parents were both immigrants from Italy. He was raised in the Monterey area and attended Santa Clara University, graduating in 1960 with a degree in political science. In 1963, he graduated with a law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and served in the U.S. Army until 1965.
