This series consists of copies of letters sent by the Collector to a wide variety of individuals and organizations, including the Secretary of the Treasury, Treasury Department bureau heads, U.S. Consuls, U.S. Attorneys, ship masters, lighthouse keepers, businesses, and private individuals. Some of the letters are numbered, mainly those sent to the Secretary of the Treasury (except letters transmitting accounts and returns). Several letters from 1853 relate to the brig Arrow, chartered by filibusterer William Walker. There are notations on several letters from 1857 indicating that the originals were lost with the wreck of the steamer Central America.
