The collection include journals, correspondence, biographical papers, and papers relating to Marsden's involvement in court cases and Bigge's Commission of Enquiry. The correspondence includes Marsden's letters to the Church Missionary Society and to various missionaries. Also included are letters from Thomas Kendall, William Hall, John King, John Butler and others connected with Marsden's activities in New Zealand and in New South Wales, Australia.

Samuel Marsden (1764-1838), pioneer clergyman, farmer and sheepbreeder, first reached Australia in 1794. He served as a chaplain in New South Wales from 1794, based at Parramatta. He built St. John's church and a formidable and thriving farm. Marsden's missionary endeavours were predominately concerned with the Maoris of New Zealand, forming the NSW Society for Affording Protection to the Natives of the South Sea Islands and Promoting their Civilisation in 1813.
