Richard Henry Gregory, tobacconist of Tarboro, N.C., traveled to China from 1905 to 1906 on behalf of the British-American Tobacco Company. Gregory served as head of the company's Leaf Department in China. In 1912, Gregory married Hattie B. Arrington and together the couple raised two children while living in Shanghai--John, who died during childhood diptheria, and Jane. Gregory made his home in China until his retirement in 1935. ...

Hattie Gregory (nee Arrington) was born in North Carolina in 1878 and educated in Greensboro. She married R. Henry Gregory in 1912 and traveled with him to Shanghai, where he became head of the Leaf Department of the British-American Tobacco Company. In the course of his work, Henry traveled extensively in China. The Gregorys raised two children while living in Shanghai -- John, who died during childhood of diphtheria, and Jane. ...

Lucy Jane Gregory Marrow (1916-2006) was born in Shanghai, China where her father, Richard Henry Gregory (1876-1955), worked for the American Tobacco Company. In 1934, Marrow returned to North Carolina with her mother, Harriet Arrington Gregory (1878-1960) to attend college (1934). She lived in Tarboro, N.C. later in life. ...
