Record Unit 306, National Air and Space Museum, Office of the Director, NASM Files, 1971-1978 and undated

These records are the official files of astronaut Michael Collins as Director, 1971-1978. To a large extent, the files concern the planning and funding of the new NASM building, its construction, the preparation of exhibits, and the opening of the Museum on July 1, 1976. On day-to-day administrative matters, documentation is uneven or lacking in some areas. Correspondents do, however, include Smithsonian and NASM staff, congressmen and other government officials, members of the aerospace and other industries, museum directors, astronauts, and the public.
