Bishop John J. Keane Collection, 1868-1918

The John Joseph Keane Collection contains some of the personal documents and photographs of the first rector of The Catholic University of America and consists of two series. Series one comprises a small number of pamphlets and other published documents ranging in focus from Keane's involvement in the debate on education in America to his installation as the Archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa, to the proceedings of a synod held in New York. There is also a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and a number of folders containing more clippings dedicated to articles concerning or written by Keane dating from 1868-1897, the year following Keane's resignation. Finally, the first series has some of Keane's personal writings, including a chronicle of his years as the university's rector, and a small amount of correspondence.

John Joseph Keane was born on September 12, 1839 in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland. He came to the United States as a child and grew up in Baltimore. He was ordained in 1866, and was appointed as an assistant at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Washington, DC. In 1878 he was named Bishop of Richmond, Virginia.
