Correspondence Relating to Restoration of the U.S. Frigate Constitution, 2/8/1926 - 6/14/1930

This series consists mostly of carbon copies of letters sent by the commandant in his capacity as committee chairman of the National Save Old Ironsides Committee, along with occasional publicity articles, press releases, progress reports, and letters received. Addressees include Navy officers, businessmen, and prominent citizens, soliciting or acknowledging their assistance or financial contributions, as well as ordinary citizens who sent in donations. The letters also concern committee operations, publicity, and fundraising proposals, the sale of lithographs of the Constitution by marine artist Gordon Grant and of souvenirs made from the ship's original wood, metal, or rigging, progress of restoration work initiated on June 16, 1927; and miscellaneous information on the vessel. Included is a summary report of campaign activities from 1925-1930. The letters appear to be from a "Constitution Office," established by the commandant to coordinate the campaign.
