S. Dillon Ripley (b. September 20, 1913, New York City, NY - d. March 12, 2001, Washington, D.C.), an ornithologist, served as the eighth Secretary of the Smithsonian from 1964 to 1984, and oversaw tremendous growth. Interested in natural history and exploration since his childhood, Ripley visited the remote nation of Ladakh when he was only thirteen years old.
