Correspondence between Deacon Elisha James of Scituate, Mass., 20 Apr.-19 Oct. 1777, his wife Sarah Foster James, and his brothers William (Bill) and Thomas James. Letters pertain to Elisha's service during the Revolutionary War as a wheelwright in Captain (probably Joseph) Eaton's Company, under General Horatio Gates at Ticonderoga and Saratoga. Family matters include descriptions of his son Stanton, the birth of his daughter Sally, the death of his mother-in-law Mrs. Foster, Thomas' battle with the slow fever and his difficulties running Elisha's farm in Scituate; and Bill's life as a Tory and sugar trader and his plans to emigrate to the West Indies to avoid being drafted a third time. Also includes photocopies, a typescript description of the letters by William Abbott, Jr., and an unverified transcription by Mary F. Parmenter and Helen James Parmenter.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
