Elisha James family letters, 1777.

Correspondence between Deacon Elisha James of Scituate, Mass., 20 Apr.-19 Oct. 1777, his wife Sarah Foster James, and his brothers William (Bill) and Thomas James. Letters pertain to Elisha's service during the Revolutionary War as a wheelwright in Captain (probably Joseph) Eaton's Company, under General Horatio Gates at Ticonderoga and Saratoga. Family matters include descriptions of his son Stanton, the birth of his daughter Sally, the death of his mother-in-law Mrs. Foster, Thomas' battle with the slow fever and his difficulties running Elisha's farm in Scituate; and Bill's life as a Tory and sugar trader and his plans to emigrate to the West Indies to avoid being drafted a third time.
