Concerning the delay in preparing the manuscript of Life on the Mississippi for publication, noting that his copyist is "laid up with the persistent enemy of this book, scarlet fever," and that the "8th batch" of the present manuscript was removed from her rooms and disinfected with carbollick [sic] acid as soon as the diagnosis was made, but that Osgood should keep it from his children. Signed "SLC."

James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R.
