Charles Coleman papers, 1819-1909.

The collection consists of papers of Charles Coleman from 1819-1909. The papers include correspondence on the social, economic, military, and political affairs of Great Britain. Of particular interest are the letters in which Coleman comments upon his travels in China and the opium trade, and letters to and from his family and friends which mention John Wilkes Booth, the Irish question, William Ewart Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, and reform class antagonisms. Also includes a commonplace book, legal documents, and auction pamphlets. The materials generally reflect the attitudes of various members of the upper class and nobility during the Victorian era.

Charles Coleman (1824?-1905?) was the son of Joseph and Sophie Coleman, and the brother of Joseph, Steve, John and Thomas Coleman. He was attending Gray's Inn (London, England) in 1851, became a lawyer and later a judge on England's "northern circuit".
