Robert A. Marmion was born in 1844 in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1868. He was appointed assistant surgeon in the United States Navy in 1868 and was promoted to full surgeon in 1879, medical inspector in 1895, and medical director in 1899. In 1902 he organized and became first president of the United States Naval Medical School. Marmion died in Washington, D. C., in 1907.
