Austin, Joseph, 1749-1827

Joseph Austin was a Quaker hatter who lived in Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York. Austin was born in 1749 to Jeremiah Austin and Margaret Congdon Austin. In 1770 he married Patience Grinnell, daughter of Daniel Grinnell and Grace Palmer Grinnell, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts; the couple were members of the nearby New Bedford Monthly Meeting. They moved to Ferrisburgh, Vermont, in 1810 and stayed there until 1822, when they moved to Dutchess County, New York. Patience died in 1824, and Joseph died in 1827.
