Capt. Cornelius Grinnell was b. Little Compton, R. I., May 11, 1758; removed to New Bedford when he was quite young where he served an apprenticeship with his brother-in-law, Joseph Austin, as hatter.

Vol. 2, p. 246. Joseph Austin, b. 1749, s. Jeremiah Austin (1730-1815) and Margaret Congdon Austin (1725-1812), m. Patience Grinnell, and his will was probated 1824-12-29. He was of Clinton, but had a house in Oswego near the Meeting House.

He named Preserved Fish and Joseph Grinnel executors, but both refused and letters of administration were granted on his estate to Cornelius Austin, his nephew. … Joseph's will noted that his wife had put Richard Dunham in care of William R. Roach of New Bedford and he was put to sea. He also mentioned James Congdon Jr.

His sister Elizabeth (-1812) married Preserved Fish (s. David and Jemima)
