Speas, Sam, 1901-1981
Variant namesSamuel F. "Sam" Speas was born in Colo. in 1901. His father worked for the railroad and Speas, who developed a lifelong interest in the railroads, also began work as a fireman on the Colorado and Southern Railway in 1921. He went on to become an engineer (1940) before retiring in 1967. Speas was also active in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. His daughter, the author Margaret Coel, helped compile her father's memories for his book, "Goin' Railroading" (1985). Speas died in 1981.
