Constituted in 1939 as an advisory group on Catholic missions among American Indians in the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota. Evolved into an annual meeting for Catholic missionaries among American Indian peoples in North Dakota and adjacent states. Reorganized in 1979 as an association of American Indian Catholics, and incorporated two years later. Substantial involvement by American Indians of Canada began in the 1980s.
