Hide Profile

The Natural History Museum was first opened in 1881. It contained collections that had originally been part of the British Museum including collections of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and collector of natural curiosities, and Joseph Banks the botanist who travelled with Captain James Cook aboard HMS Endeavour, 1768-1771. It was Sir Richard Owen, Superintendent of the British Museum’s natural history collection who persuaded the Government that a new museum was needed.
