Bedford was a lawyer and politician and a graduate of the College of New Jersey (Princeton University). He served as a representative from Delaware to the U.S. Continental Congress and the U.S. Constitution Convention of 1787. President George Washington appointed him as a federal district judge for Delaware (1789-1812).
