Allen Forte (1926-2014) was the Battell Professor Emeritus of the Theory of Music at Yale University. He was a specialist in 20th-century atonal music, musical analysis using Schenkerian methods, and the American popular ballad. He is the author of over one hundred books and articles, and advised seventy-two Ph.D. dissertations. Allen Forte received his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University, and taught at Columbia University Teachers College, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes College of Music before joining the faculty of Yale University.
