Forte, Madeleine, 1938-

Madeleine Forte was born on September 20, 1938 in Orléansville (present-day Chlef), Algeria. After initial study on the piano with her aunt, she studied with Alfred Cortot and Wilhelm Kempff, and earned an artist diploma and a musicology diploma from the École Normale de Musique in Paris studying with Norbert Dufourcq, as well an artist diploma from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (Uniwersytet Muzyczny Fryderyka Chopina), studying with Zbigniew Drzewiecki. In the United States, she earned bachelors and master's degrees from The Juilliard School, studting with Rosina Lhevinne and Martin Canin, and in 1984, she earned a Ph.D. from New York University, where her dissertation was titled "Olivier Messiaen, the musical mediator, and his major influences Liszt, DeBussy, and Bartók." Dr. Forte taught at Boise State University, where she was named Professor Emerita of Piano at the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts, and she was awarded the Master Teacher Certificate of the Music Teachers National Association. In 1996, she was a Visiting Hendon Fellow at Yale University She has recorded prolifically and appeared on international radio and television. Dr. Forte now resides in Connecticut.
