His post-war assignments included Vice Chief of Staff and then Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, from 1947 to 1953, and U.S. representative on the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) military committee, from 1953 to 1955. His decorations included four Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, and the Bronze Star. He authored the book War in Peacetime (1969).
