Born in 1843 in New York State. Enlisted in Company H, First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics at Spring Arbor, Sept. 23, 1861. Discharged at Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 31, 1861 after taking part in battles of Perryville, Ky., and Laverne, Tenn. Worked as timber cruiser, marking trees for cutting in Michigan forests; attended business school at Olivet, Sheriff of Ludington County.
