Charles Hyde Warren was born in Watertown, Connecticut, on 27 September 1876. His parents were Charles Alanson and Francis Maria (Hyde) Warren. His college preparation was received at the Watertown public schools and at the High School of Waterbury, where he graduated in 1893. He then entered the Yale Sheffield Scientific School, electing a special course in chemistry. He graduated with honors in 1896 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. He then spent three years in graduate study specializing in Mineralogy, receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Yale in 1899. During his time of graduate studied he held two positions. First as Assistant in Analytical Chemistry from 1896-1897, and then as Assistant in Mineralogy from 1897-1900. In 1900 Charles Hyde Warren was appointed Instructor in Mineralogy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Later, in 1904, he was promoted to be Assistant Professor. In 1909 he was again promoted to Associate Professor. And by 1912 he had became a full Professor, holding the Chair of Mineralogy in the Department of Geology and Mining at MIT. In 1922 Warren left MIT and returned to Yale as Dean of the Sheffield School of Science.
