Born in Detroit, Michigan, Ledyard received the B.A. degree from Harvard College and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1875. He began the practice of law in New York City with the firm of Scudder & Carter, later Carter, Ledyard & Milburn. His father, Henry Ledyard, was a graduate of Columbia College (1830), lawyer, diplomat, and Mayor of Detroit. His mother, Matilda Frances Cass, was the daughter of General Lewis Cass, first governor of the Michigan Territory.
