E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. DuPont Finance.

Hide Profile

In 1902, a century after its founding, Pierre S. du Pont joined with his cousins T. Coleman du Pont and Alfred I. du Pont to reconstitute the family explosives firm, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, as a modern dorporation that operated according to the principles of systematic management. Following the company's reorganization, Pierre was named Treasurer. In this capacity he was responsible for the formulation of the company's financial policies. A Treasurer's Department was formally established in 1903. Pierre S. du Pont resigned as Treasurer on February 15, 1914, but remained as Chairman of the Finance Committee until March 15, 1926. Du Pont was succeeded by John J. Raskob who served as Treasurer until 1918 and then Vice President in charge of finance until 1946.

As the company diversified its product lines and adopted an increasingly complex managerial structure, the Treasurer's Dept. gradually added new functions. By 1921, the department was responsible for all aspects of corporate finance (including stock transfers and dividends), accounting, auditing, tax compliance, and the administration of employee savings accounts, bonus plans, and pension funds. The Treasurer's Dept. was renamed the Financial Dept. on November 1, 1977. Pension fund investment was spun off to a separate department on January 1, 1975, but reabsorbed on November 1, 1990. In May 1990, responsibility for employee compensation and benefits was assigned to the Financial and Administrative Services Division of the Employee Relations Dept. The Finance Dept. was restyled "Du Pont Finance" on November 1, 1990, and "DuPont Finance" in 1991.
