Shirley Elizabeth Black graduated from University of South Carolina in 1921 and later served as president of the USC Alumnae Association; she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. D. Shuler Black; born in Georgetown, S.C., but raised in Columbia, S.C., her residency in the city continued after marriage to Charles Oliver Brown; at the time of her death in 1994, Brown lived in West Columbia, S.C.
