He also appears in the 1860 and 1880 census, first as a clerk and then as working in real estate. The city directories for 1895 and 1896 identify his occupation as librarian. His obituary is in the Historical Washington Post index for 1897, listing his age as 77. His address is given as the same as on the letter, "701 6th St. NW."
