Nation (New York, N.Y. : 1865)

Hide Profile

The Nation, a liberal weekly magazine of politics and culture, has been published continuously since its founding in 1865 by Edwin Lawrence Godkin. Freda Kirchwey (1893-1976) joined the Nation's International Relations Section in 1918; in 1937 she purchased the magazine from Maurice Wertheim. The Nation Associates was created in 1943 as the magazine's nonprofit publishing, educational, and fund raising arm. Kirchwey's "militantly liberal" editorship was marked by perpetual financial crisis and legal battles. The Nation was banned in 1948 from New York City schools, and elsewhere later, following its publication of Paul Blanshard's series on the Catholic Church and American society; Archibald MacLeish led efforts to remove the bans. In 1955, Kirchwey, fatigued emotionally and financially, handed the magazine over to editor Carey McWilliams and publisher George G. Kirstein. Kirchwey was married to Evans Clark (1888-1970), director of the Twentieth Century Fund and also involved in the magazine. They had three sons, only one of whom lived to adulthood (Michael Clark).
