Catholic Church. Apostolic Nunciature (Malta)
Hide Profile
Before the twentieth century there was no permanent nunciature for Malta. An inquisitor, perhaps with diplomatic rank, was accredited to the Knights of St. John, who had been granted the island of Malta by Emperor Charles V in 1530. Special nuncios were sometimes sent to Malta. For example, nuncios were sent by Gregory XIII in 1576 and 1581 to reform the order. The knights were expelled from Malta by the French in 1798. In the twentieth century, churches in Malta were the responsibility of the apostolic delegation in Great Britain until 1965, when the nunciature for Malta was established.
