Witherspoon, Robert, 1767-1837
Variant namesPlanter from Sumter District, S.C.; son of Robert Witherspoon (1728-1788) and Elizabeth Heathly (1740-1820); first elected to the S.C. House of Representatives from Williamsburg County in the 10th (1792-1794), the 15th (1802-1804), and 17th (1806-1808) General Assemblies; his next legislative position was as a representative in the U.S. House during the 11th Congress (1809-1811); on his return to S.C., Witherspoon was again elected to the S.C. House from from Claremont County, S.C., in the 22nd (1816-1817) General Assembly; and later served as S.C. Senator from Claremont during the 24th (1820-1821) General Assembly; Witherspoon died, 11 Oct. 1837, at Coldstream, his home in Sumter District, S.C.
