Bailhache-Brayman.

The Bailhache family of Alton, Ill. and the Brayman family of Springfield, Ill. were prominent in mid-nineteenth century Illinois history and when Adaline, the daughter of Mason Brayman (codifier of Illinois law, railroad attorney, Civil War brigadier general, newspaper editor and governor of Idaho Territory) married William H. Bailhache(editor of the Springfield State Journal, Quartermaster Corps during the Civil War, special agent for the Treasury Department under William McKinley, Chinese customs inspector in California and son of John Bailhache, editor of the Alton Telegraph and Illinois legislator, 1841-1843) the two families were joined.

The Bailhaches were Episcopalian and friends with Philander Chase, founder of Jubilee College. The Braymans were Baptist. Mary, Brayman's wife, traveled around the south to be near him during the Civil War. Arthur Bailhache died at Pilot Knob while serving in the 38th Illinois Infantry and Preston served as Surgeon with the 14th Illinois Cavalry and the 19th Illinois Infantry, later with the U.S. marine hospitals.
