United Order of Panguitch (Panguitch, Utah)

Panguitch is in Garfield County in the southern part of Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized the community there under the principles of the United Order on December 18, 1874. The United Order Movement was started by Brigham Young (1801-1877) as a cooperative communal strategy to bring economic and moral reform to Utah. The initial officers were George W. Sevy, president; John W. Norton and James H. Imlay, vice presidents; William D. Kartchnier, secretary; and David Shakespear, treasurer. The United Order of Panguitch lasted approximately two years before it was dissolved.
