Hugh Thomas Henry was born on November 27, 1862 in Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1883, and entered St. Charles' Seminary in Overbrook. He was ordained on June 15, 1889. Henry remained at St. Charles as a professor of physical science and ecclesiastical music, and later, ecclesiastical history. While continuing his work at the seminary, Henry was rector of the Roman Catholic High School for Boys in Philadelphia from 1902-1919. During this period, he was also the spiritual director of the confraternity of Sursum Corda. He was elevated to the rank of domestic prelate in 1915. In 1919, Henry left Roman Catholic High School to become professor of Homiletics at the Catholic University of America, where he remained until 1937. He contributed many articles to various Catholic periodicals. He also wrote poems and hymns; his most well-known "Hymn to the Pope" was put to music by Henry G. Gnass. Henry died on March 12, 1946 in Washington, DC.
