University of New Mexico. Board of Regents.

Hide Profile

Although the archive is listed as belonging to the University Secretary, that office was not established until 1948 by President Tom Popejoy. Prior to that time the responsibility for the records rested with the Office of the President. John Durrie, who was named the first Secretary of the University, was responsible for gathering most of the materials from the early years and saving them from destruction. Despite his best efforts, however, he could not always control events. As the records aged they were transferred from his office to the basement of Scholes Hall where they were subjected to vermin and occasional flooding. Many of the records dated from 1945-1960 were lost to flooding in the building the spring of 1960. Durrie was succeeded by his long-time assistant, Anne Brown, in 1976 and she held the office until February 1993. After her departure the responsibility for preparing and maintaining the minutes, agendas and other records was transferred back to the Office of the President.
