Born in Milano 1908; son of the well-known Italian socialist Claudio Treves (1869-1933); worked for the Milanese socialist paper La Giustizia in the early 1920s; member of the Executive of the underground Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI); worked as a liaison officer with Italian exiles in Paris; lived in Great Britain 1938-1944; engaged in linguistic research at Liverpool University 1939; lecturer in Italian at Bedford College (University of London) 1939-1940; scriptwriter and broadcaster for the Italian section of the BBC 1940-1944; contributed to several papers on Italian affairs; published Ẁhat Mussolini did to us' 1940 and Ìtaly, yesterday, today and tomorrow' 1942; member of the London Branch of the PSI, of the Advisory Committee of International Socialist Forum and of the International Bureau of the Fabian Society; returned to Italy 1945; editor of Avanti!.
