In 1782 the New York Legislature granted a tract of land in central New York for bounty lands to reward the soldiers who fought in the Revolution. In 1786 the state forbid occupancy on the grants due to a conflict with Indian Claims. Instead, "The Old Military Tract" was created in north eastern New York, virtually unpopulated, to compensate for the previous grant.
