Anthony G. Tassin was ordained in the Benedictine Order in 1950 and received his Ph.D. in English from Louisiana State University in 1966, submitting a dissertation on the critical writings of Cleanth Brooks. After he was dispensed from his vows in 1971, he joined the library staff of the Earl K. Long Library at the University of New Orleans.
Cleanth Brooks, one of the founders of New Criticism, editor of the Southern Review, professor at Louisiana State University and Yale University, Faulkner scholar, educator, and lecturer, was born in Murray, Kentucky, on October 16, 1906.
